Believe is a good word to use during this Christmas Season. To believe is to accept something as true or real; to credit a (person) with veracity, to think, assume, with a clause as object. To believe is to accept the truth, existence, worth, etc. of something within; to believe in freedom; to have confidence; place one’s trust; to have religious faith and to believe is something we can do within ourselves.
Have you seen the movies “Miracle on 34th Street?” I have watched the first version of the movie as well as the second version. A few years ago, the BCT cast brought this story to us in a theater performance which was done very effectively. The cast, music and story was presented true to the movie and was very pleasing to the full house that came to watch the production.
Miracle on 34th Street is a story about a man named Chris Kringle who says he is the Santa Claus who exists to bring joy, gifts and love to all. He is hired to play Santa at Macys and when visiting with the children, he tells them where they can find the gift they want at a lesser price than Macys. This gets him into trouble along with the fact he is just an old man with a beard and the belief he is Santa.
He finally must go to court to see if he is incompetent. If so, he will be sent to a mental hospital. His lawyer is asked to provide proof that Chris Kringle is really Santa. The letters written to Santa and sent to the Post Office are taken to the courthouse for the proof that Santa is in court and is Chris Kringle.
The United States Postal Service is never to send a letter to the wrong person. So, with thousands of letters to Santa taken to the Courthouse, the case is dismissed. Chris Kringle is declared to be Santa Claus. Miracle on 34th Street is a great Christmas story.
Every year a letter is published in many newspapers about the little girl who wrote a letter in 1897 and sent it to the New York Sun paper. The little girl is named Virginia, and she wants to know if Santa is real. The writer who answers Virginia’s letter tells her that Santa’s gift of love, generosity and devotion exists to give our lives beauty and joy. If Santa did not exist, the eternal light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.
A thousand years from now Santa will still be real to those who believe in the hearts of childhood. We never see the real Santa but the idea of Santa lives in our hearts as we share our love and generosity with others. The belief in doing good, giving gifts, sharing hope and kindness is celebrated especially at Christmas.
Just imagine how wonderful it would be to share the love of Santa each day of the year with those with whom we have contact. Each day would be what our Lord and Savior designed for us thousands of years ago when He came to earth as a baby on our first Christmas.
Can you believe that a King came to earth as a baby boy born in a dirty stable with animals? He was laid in a manger filled with hay which was used to feed the animals. Jesus was the name our Heavenly Father used while on earth.
He came as a baby, grew to be a boy, worked as a carpenter, visited with important rulers, walked everywhere with his friends to teach, preach, heal, resurrect others and was loved or hated by those who knew him.
Jesus was severely beaten and hung on a cross to die even though he was innocent. He died and was resurrected back to life. He visited with his friends to show them that He was alive and then he ascended to Heaven.
This story has been told by those who knew and loved Jesus. His story is in the Bible. We are asked to believe this accounting is real. We are to believe.
We did not see, hear or participate in this accounting of Jesus being born in a stable. God came to earth as a baby in Bethlehem so every person would have everlasting life if he or she believed that God made this sacrifice through His everlasting love for us.
Everyone is given the chance to believe that Jesus was born, died and resurrected into the eternal home He made for us. This Christmas story has been shared with all who will listen.
To believe in a Heavenly Father who loves us so much that He came to earth to save us and to present Himself as Jesus Christ is the true meaning of love, sacrifice and redemption. God loved the world so much that He gave this gift to everyone who would believe in Him.
This is the true meaning of Christmas. Hope, Joy, Love and Peace are the words that bring us the gift of Christmas. Jesus Christ is the light of the world. We need to believe that through His light we can shine a light of hope, joy, love and peace to everyone who needs it. This is believing.
I leave you with this message found on a Christmas card.
